This winter is likely to be Ukraine’s worst since Russia’s all-out invasion began in February 2022. So far, the dedication and bravery of Ukrainian doctors and nurses has prevented collapse of Ukrainian healthcare, but the system is stretched to its limits.

Can you help?

This holiday season, your charitable giving can make a big difference. The Ukraine Solidarity Network is working with Be Like We Are! the Ukrainian Nurses and Healthcare Union, and Kryla, a New Orleans based NGO, to buy desperately needed medical equipment for the Mykola Halytskyi Nizhyn Central City Hospital.

As of today, we need $12,000 to reach our initial goal which will enable us to purchase one very expensive, but vitally needed, piece of equipment. Please donate whatever amount you can. All donations are tax deductible in the USA.

In Ukraine today, doctors and nurses often work without essential life-saving equipment due to the war, economic collapse spurred by wartime destruction, the Ukrainian government’s neoliberal policies, and to the demands of US and European lenders.

Our immediate goal is to buy an HTI BioChem FC-360 biochemistry analyzer. These machines are standard equipment in most healthcare facilities around the world but not in Ukraine. They accurately and rapidly detect infections and serious conditions such as liver and kidney disease and heart-related problems. Acquisition of just one of these machines will dramatically increase the time nurses and other health care workers can directly attend to patients’ needs.

The Mykola Halytskyi Nizhyn Central City Hospital is a crucial multidisciplinary regional cluster hospital with surgical, neurological, trauma, cardiac, pediatric, maternity, and other departments. Serving the entire Nizhyn district, it lacks modern equipment needed for proper care, especially during wartime.

According to Ivan Korosko, General Director of Nizhyn Hospital, “We are using an old analyzer that can perform only 20–40 tests per hour. Sometimes it breaks down—tests have to be redone. It also frequently needs repairs. We are saddened that a large cluster hospital still lacks a modern analyzer. We would be sincerely grateful for such support. New modern analyzer equipment will not only increase the number of tests we can perform but also greatly improve their quality.”

This machine will result in a 10 to 20x increase in capacity over the hospital’s current equipment, dramatically reduce wait times for critical test results, and save countless lives of patients both civilian and military.
